Ag Awareness

Ag Awareness

Come and visit our "hands-on" agricultural area and learn about farm animals, crops, horticulture, and new agricultural technology. During the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair we bring the country to the city. There are two big rooms chock full of things to do…The Royal Farm Yard and Thru the Farm Gate.

The Royal Farm Yard

Stepping into the Royal Farm Yard is just the beginning of your interactive Agricultural Experience.

The Ag-tivity Zone will be a new addition to the Royal Farm Yard in 2010.  4H volunteers will be keeping you busy in here, a great place to let the kids have some “hands on” fun while learning about agriculture.  Try separating seed, braiding a “horse” tail, milking a “cow”, digging for potatoes, “driving” a tractor and taking some fun farm pictures.  Folks from Ag in the Classroom will be putting on a combination of demonstrations and fun learning opportunities in the Ag-tivity Zone including;

Canola Crush -From a tiny black seed to heart healthy oil.  Have you ever wondered where canola oil comes from?  Come and have a chance to crush canola seed and make canola oil.  This great hands on activity is perfect for all ages.

Name That Commodity - Agriculture is everywhere you look.  Toothpaste, air bags, linoleum, and crayons are all from agriculture.  Do you know what the connection is?  Come test your knowledge by playing our Name that Commodity Game.  All ages can work together as a team to explore the many connections agriculture has to you in your everyday life.

So You Think You Can Farm? - Farming? No problem!! Sounds pretty easy doesn’t it? Come find out. Test your knowledge of farming and see if you really CAN farm! This will be a fun and interactive family oriented game show session to test your knowledge of farming.

While you’re in the Royal Farm Yard, be sure to pay a visit to Cattle Country. You can learn about all the different breeds of cattle (yes, there is more than one kind!) and you can even see them up close! Can you tell an Angus from a Charolais? On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, you can take in the cattle shows.

No visit to the Royal Farm Yard would be complete without spending time at the Learning Stage. The whole family will want to find a spot on the bleachers so they won’t miss the ongoing demonstrations. Whether you want to learn about how to train a horse or dog or how to clip for animal for a show, you are certain to find a demo that delights!  Check our website closer to the fair for a full schedule of what’s going on at the Learning Stage.

Along with Cattle Country and the Learning Stage the Royal Farm Yard plays host to a variety of Live Animal Displays like rare breeds of farm animals, alpacas, goats and miniature horses.  It’s a great place to get up close and ask the experts about these animals.

Thru the Farm Gate

When you leave the Royal Farm Yard and go Thru the Farm Gate, new adventures await you.

New this year, Agrium is bringing their high tech, interactive Seed Survivor display. Children are encouraged to take a passport and ‘try to get out alive’ by mastering the elements that plants need to grow.  In addition to Seed Survivor, visitors will be able to take in a comprehensive seed display and learn more about Manitoba’s crops.  Be sure to make the Seed Zone part of your visit to the 2010 Fair!

The Royal Petting Zoo is a favorite spot for those wanting to have some fun with the cute and cuddly critters and get that perfect picture of the kids at the fair. You can get right in the goat pen and hold one on your knee! Are you taller than the Llama or smaller than the donkey? Come out and find out for yourself.

Thanks to the Manitoba Farm Animal Council, Thru the Farm gate showcases incredible live animal displays for Equine, Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Swine and Poultry. Allow lots of time to walk around to visit the 7 different exhibits. You will learn about where your food comes from, and how animals live on the farm. Maybe you can even touch them!

Thru The Farm Gate offers an unforgettable experience to both young and old. Bring your family, friends, and grandparents too - and learn all about what the agricultural industry is doing today and for the future!

Note: Both rooms are open to the public from 11 am – 8 pm daily during the fair.
