Royal Horse Show

Regardless of whether you’re an experienced equine enthusiast or you simply love horses, The Royal Horse Show is an experience that’s certain to impress! The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair attracts the top quality horses and riders from throughout North America.

Heavy Horses

The Draft Horses or “Heavy Horses” as they are often called, are definitely a crowd pleaser! Originally “working horses”, these gentle giants remain as our connection with the past, and continue to amaze crowds with their intelligence, power and agility. Visitors will see the draft horses in a variety of classes including in teams, cart classes, unicorn, four, six and eight horse hitches. The glitter and jingle of their harness and thundering hooves as they enter the arena is magical.

Our visitors are particularly amazed by the “Obstacle Course” You will be amazed by the precision driving skills which allow these teams to maneuver these gentle giants around the course. Don’t miss them! classes, scheduled for Wednesday and Friday evening shows.

Hunter Jumper Horses

The Jumper Division of the Show tests the ability of the horses to negotiate obstacles..namely fences! The course designer has laid out a challenging course to test the horse and rider at each level of competition. Each night of the Fair features a Jumper Class which displays outstanding athleticism and horsemanship!

Monday night takes an entertaining approach to Jumping during the Gamblers’ Choice! Each jump is assigned a point value, according to the level of difficulty, and riders do their utmost to win by accumulating the highest number of points. And if they opt to attempt the “Wild Card” jump, they can really rack up the points!

The other novelty class which is loved by young and old is Wednesday night’s Dog & Horse Relay. This class features some of the beloved SuperDogs teamed up with jumping horses, competing on a modified course. Be sure to be on hand to cheer on your favourite team!

Hunter classes were originally designed to identify horses that would perform well at a foxhunt. Although you won’t find any foxes at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, you will note that the course is designed with a natural appearance to simulate the fences and ditches you might encounter on a morning hunt. At the Royal, most Hunter classes will be held in the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence during the daytime hours.

Hackney Harness

The Hackney Pony is known as the “Aristocrat of the Showring” as they were used originally to pull the vehicles of well-to-do businessmen. What they lack in size, they make up with their high spirit and extreme action. You can see the hackneys daily at the Royal.

Barrel Racing

Be sure to catch the action on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons when the Ladies’ Barrell Racing gets underway! These gutsy women and their horses are all out to win! You’ll hold your breath as each horse and rider attempts to complete the clover-leaf pattern around the barrels in the fastest time!

Young Horse Division

Children’s Costume Class:

The Tuesday evening show features the Children’s Costume Class, where children AND their ponies/horses are dressed up in some very creative ways! This is where imagination meets equine, and the results are sheer entertainment.
